Summary

A tale of high adventure and survival on the Japanese frontier!

In the early 20th century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi Sugimoto searches the wilderness of the Japanese frontier of Hokkaido for a hoard of hidden gold。 With only a cryptic map and a native Ainu girl to help him, Saichi must also deal with every murderous cutthroat, bandit and rogue who knows about the treasure!

Immortal Sugimoto, a survivor of the assault on 203 Meter Hill during the Russo-Japanese War, now scratches out a meager existence in the post-war gold rush in the wild frontier of Hokkaido。 A chance encounter in the woods puts a map to a hidden fortune of Ainu gold in his hands, but Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it!

I had not previously had any interest in this series (and honestly had only heard the name (a lot) and did not actually know anything about it), but the first ten volumes are currently free on Amazon Japan (until the end of the month) and after reading the summary it actually did sound interesting, so I decided to give it a go and it's really good! Now to read those next nine volumes before they disappear from my Kindle app! Caught up with this as it goes towards its final arc。 It was…nice。 I don’t think it’s anything mind blowing (the anime doesn’t really have the best production, but it’s a lot of fun to watch), but still very readable。

This was surprisingly good and is set during the gold rush in Hokkaido near the early 20th century。Its about a man named Saichi Sugimoto who after learning that there is a gold rush and the location of it after learning from a prisoner makes it his mission to find it and meets an Ainu woman named Asirpa and its fascinating seeing their adventures together as they fight bears and other wild animals and more and cooking and catching criminals and having weird adventures。 They learn of the 71st div This was surprisingly good and is set during the gold rush in Hokkaido near the early 20th century。Its about a man named Saichi Sugimoto who after learning that there is a gold rush and the location of it after learning from a prisoner makes it his mission to find it and meets an Ainu woman named Asirpa and its fascinating seeing their adventures together as they fight bears and other wild animals and more and cooking and catching criminals and having weird adventures。 They learn of the 71st division also after the gold and its fascinating seeing these two groups battle and more。 Until Sugimoto meets another prisoner and learns more about this quest。Its a good volume and like has so much thing of quest and gold rush and the main character is fascinating and his attitude is quite cavalier and interesting。 Plus the girl sidekick is good too and I love knowing more about the Ainu culture。 Plus the art is so good and I love how the author is also making it a cooking sort of manga。 And I like the exploration of the early 20th century attitudes and more。 。。。more

An action packed historical manga set during the gold rush at the end of the Meiji era。 Artwork is very captivating, characters are memorable, and I throughly enjoyed how much detail was noted in this story-It shows a lot of the writing was based on solid research done on this time period。 Highly recommend

While I'm not familiar with the Ainu people or what Japan was like during this period, Noda has clearly spent a lot of time doing research。 As for the art, it's clean yet expressive。 Noda is great as capturing expressions, which is one of the reasons why this series has produced so many great memes。 In addition, the action scenes are dynamic and easy to read。 This series has such a cool premise and I hope it holds up through multiple volumes。 While I'm not familiar with the Ainu people or what Japan was like during this period, Noda has clearly spent a lot of time doing research。 As for the art, it's clean yet expressive。 Noda is great as capturing expressions, which is one of the reasons why this series has produced so many great memes。 In addition, the action scenes are dynamic and easy to read。 This series has such a cool premise and I hope it holds up through multiple volumes。 。。。more

I’m excited to read the next but don’t love that the series has so many books already published。 How many will I make through before losing interest。 The series starts strong, great world building。 The art is clear and interesting, the plot well-developed。

This manga was hyped in my country 2 years ago。 I finally found it in the library and wanted to give it a try。Aside from the broken skulls and bowel there is little exciting about the Manga。I read it cause it tells a lot about the war against Russia, the time after the war and about the Ainu people。 I know reading a Manga is no replacement for a history book, but in the Manga it's mixed into a story and I like that。Sadly there is little to nothing of a story。It comes down to a soldier and a youn This manga was hyped in my country 2 years ago。 I finally found it in the library and wanted to give it a try。Aside from the broken skulls and bowel there is little exciting about the Manga。I read it cause it tells a lot about the war against Russia, the time after the war and about the Ainu people。 I know reading a Manga is no replacement for a history book, but in the Manga it's mixed into a story and I like that。Sadly there is little to nothing of a story。It comes down to a soldier and a young hunter girl teaming up to find about 12 ppl with certain tattoos。 。。。more

I was curious about this, so I tried the first chapter in the bookstore and was surprised at how much it actually intrigued me and pulled me into the story。 The setting is really interesting and immersive, and damn, I really like the art style, it’s just so clean。 I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the ainu language was supervised by someone and at the end of the volume, a bunch of ainu culture references were shown。 While reading I had been curious about how accurate the information ab I was curious about this, so I tried the first chapter in the bookstore and was surprised at how much it actually intrigued me and pulled me into the story。 The setting is really interesting and immersive, and damn, I really like the art style, it’s just so clean。 I was also pleasantly surprised to see that the ainu language was supervised by someone and at the end of the volume, a bunch of ainu culture references were shown。 While reading I had been curious about how accurate the information about the ainu culture was, and so it was really nice to see that the author did his research and had help from Ainu associations。 。。。more

Golden Kamuy, Vol。 1 , by Satoru Noda, is an interesting graphic novel taking place in Meiji era Hokkaido。 It follows Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi "Immortal" Sugimoto, a scarred veteran making a living panning for gold in remote Hokkaido。 He stumbles across a very real legend of a hidden cache of gold。 With the help of an Ainu girl, he proceeds to track down to gold, battling rival claimants, mysterious ex-prisoners, and the dangers of nature。 This book was pretty entertaining。 I enjoyed th Golden Kamuy, Vol。 1 , by Satoru Noda, is an interesting graphic novel taking place in Meiji era Hokkaido。 It follows Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi "Immortal" Sugimoto, a scarred veteran making a living panning for gold in remote Hokkaido。 He stumbles across a very real legend of a hidden cache of gold。 With the help of an Ainu girl, he proceeds to track down to gold, battling rival claimants, mysterious ex-prisoners, and the dangers of nature。 This book was pretty entertaining。 I enjoyed the historical context of Meiji era Japan, the tidbits on Ainu culture, and the gritty events and setting of the story。 This was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to coming volumes。 。。。more

An interesting take on the Russo-Japanese wars; I'm not well-versed in that era of history so I ended up researching a lot of events so I could understand what was going on in terms of setting but the idea of tattoos leading to treasure is so exciting and Sugimoto is a very cool protagonist so I look forward to reading more!

At parts, the story was a little confusing to follow, but it always brought me right back into what was happening。 It started strong and kept the same momentum throughout。 With some amazing art and a compelling story, I’m left wanting more。

The story is a little barebones and has some holes, but it keeps a good pace and has a lot of interesting stuff that the author has clearly researched about the time (1904 Japan) and the culture of the Ainu people of Hokkaido。 It's part war comic, part pulp adventure, part wilderness survival and there's the start of some nice character development and backstory in there, which is great。 Two unlikely friends team up to find a long lost stash of gold, it's a fun read。 The story is a little barebones and has some holes, but it keeps a good pace and has a lot of interesting stuff that the author has clearly researched about the time (1904 Japan) and the culture of the Ainu people of Hokkaido。 It's part war comic, part pulp adventure, part wilderness survival and there's the start of some nice character development and backstory in there, which is great。 Two unlikely friends team up to find a long lost stash of gold, it's a fun read。 。。。more

The art is an effective unnerving mix of pointy whitespace manga elegance and spinal columns n gore。 Both clean and grotesque。 A lot of hunting and zoology facts involved: Someone cared。 Also Sugimoto chamber-punches a bear。

Overall, an intense but beautifully rendered tale of post-conflict trauma and the search for not just treasure but understanding on the Hokkaido frontier。 The landscapes and animals are incredibly detailed, and Saichi Sugimoto is a complex and compelling character。 While I like Asirpa, she seems right now to be Saichi's guide, conscience, and walking history textbook more than anything, though I can see her character arc beginning。 Overall, there's a lot of juicy mysteries to unravel, and I love Overall, an intense but beautifully rendered tale of post-conflict trauma and the search for not just treasure but understanding on the Hokkaido frontier。 The landscapes and animals are incredibly detailed, and Saichi Sugimoto is a complex and compelling character。 While I like Asirpa, she seems right now to be Saichi's guide, conscience, and walking history textbook more than anything, though I can see her character arc beginning。 Overall, there's a lot of juicy mysteries to unravel, and I love that Ainu people are featured prominently in a manga, but I won't let this be the one thing that informs me on Ainu culture, written as it is from a Japanese perspective。 。。。more
